  • The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Sunday began raids at multiple places in Kolkata and adjoining areas, including the house of former R G Kar Medical College and Hospital principal Sandip Ghosh, in connection with a corruption probe.

The raids began a day after the CBI registered a case of financial irregularities at R G Kar Medical College, where a trainee woman doctor was allegedly raped and murdered on August 9.

When a CBI team arrived at Ghosh’s house in Beleghata, initially no one opened the gate. It was only after 20 minutes that Ghosh, who had already been questioned for nine days in the rape-murder case, opened the gate at around 8.10 am.

A team of the Anti Corruption Branch of the CBI also reached the residence of Dr Debashish Som of forensic medicine at R G Kar Medical College at Kestopur on VIP Road. Meanwhile, another CBI team began to raid the house of former medical superintendent cum vice-principal Sanjay Vashisth in Entally. Apart from this, a CBI went to the house of one Biplab Singh, who works as a medical supplier at the hospital, in Howrah.

The CBI took over the investigation of the corruption case from the Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted by the West Bengal government on the direction of Calcutta High Court. The high court had already handed over the probe into the alleged rape and murder of the 31-year-old woman doctor to the CBI, expressing displeasure with the probe by the state police.

The high court passed the order in the corruption case on a plea filed by Dr Akhtar Ali, who was the deputy superintendent at R G Kar Medical College until last year. The CBI’s Anti-Corruption Branch filed the FIR at Nizam Palace.

The postgraduate trainee doctor was found dead in a seminar hall of R G Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. The police arrested Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, in connection with the case.
