  • KOLKATA: The West Bengal Commission for Protection of Child Rights has taken suo motu cognisance of a video on social media where in a demonstration against the R G Kar rape and murder case, a person is seen announcing a reward of Rs 10 crore to anyone who rapes the minor daughter of a senior Trinamool leader. Other participants in the event are seen cheering at the announcement, endorsing the outrageous statement.

The remarks have also evoked strong reactions from Trinamool leaders including party minister and legislator Firhad Hakim and MP Derek O'Brien.

"The commission strongly condemns this kind of statement and calls for police and judicial action under Pocso, Juvenile Justice Act and UNRC against those in the video. While the entire state is mourning the sad demise of the doctor at R G Kar, calling for another rape to settle scores is violative of the law and could send out a dangerous message if punitive steps are not taken. This can put not just the minor girl in question but all minor girls at risk," a commission official said.

WBCPCR has asked the police to arrest the culprits and provide adequate protection to the girl in question. "We have given police two days' time," said WBCPCR legal consultant Siddiqua Parveen.

Hakim has strongly criticised the video that publicly called to outrage the modesty of a girl child who he says is nothing less than his own grandchild. " These monsters must be eradicated to ensure that our society gets at least a little safer," said O'Brien.
