• Colleges push back 1st day of UG, some schools go online

  • Kolkata: Some colleges have joined the several schools that have taken steps to address concerns about the Nabanna Abhijan rally on Tuesday. At many city schools, classes have either been suspended for the day or shifted online.

    Some colleges in the city, including AJC Bose College, have decided to call first-year students from Wednesday instead of Tuesday.

    “The huge rally might result in traffic disruption. So, students may face trouble. Considering the situation, we deferred full-fledged classes for first-year students that were set to start from Tuesday to Wednesday,” said Purna Chandra Maity, principal.

    At many private schools in the city, though classes have been suspended, schools are open for teachers and office staff. Schools located in the heart of the city, including Gokhale Memorial, Loreto House, St James and Avinav Bharati, have decided to suspend classes.

    Avinav Bhrati’s half-yearly exams that were scheduled from Tuesday have been deferred to Wednesday. St Lawrence High School has declared study leave on Tuesday and deferred the exams to Saturday. Though DPS Ruby Park suspended classes, the school will be open for teachers and staff. A school official said school buses ferry the teachers. Ruby Park Public School Taratala has declared class suspension but teachers will have school buses to come to school.

    Sushila Birla Girls’ School suspended classes for lower and upper nursery while there will be online classes for lower KG to class IV. Exams of classes V to XII have been pushed back. Calcutta Girls’ has issued a notice to reschedule exams scheduled on Tuesday. Lakshmipat Singhania Academy decided to have online classes for senior students. Classes for primary students have been shifted to next Saturday. G D Birla Centre for Education decided to shift classes to the online mode for Tuesday. The practical examinations have been deferred. La Martiniere for Boys’ and La Martiniere for Girls’ have decided on early dispersal while DAV Public School and Shri Shikshayatan have declared early dispersal after scheduled exams. Ashok Hall will conduct online classes.

    Don Bosco Park Circus, Don Bosco Liluah and Our Lady Queen of Mission have called off classes on Tuesday while Frank Anthony will be open and it is up to the parents to take a call on sending their wards. Most schools in Howrah will be shut on Tuesday. “There is no problem with raising a voice or protesting against the incident but it should not lead to a collapse of the city,” a school principal said.
