  • Kolkata: Bengal BJP on Monday officially said it would not join the “students’ rally” to Nabanna but added that it was ready to support any protest movement, cutting across party lines, demanding justice for the R G Kar rape-murder victim.

Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar said “doctored” videos were being circulated to tarnish a non-political movement.

“This is not BJP’s rally and we are not the organisers. But we will support any mass movement that is against misrule in the state. We will support any movement that demands justice for the R G Kar victim and the resignation of CM Mamata Banerjee,” he said.

Earlier in the day, Bengal BJP co-minder Amit Malviya had alleged that govt was trying to derail a movement citing excuses. Trinamool had raised apprehensions about the trouble students appearing for the UGC-NET exam might face. “Now, TMC’s official handle has put out a well-choreographed, edited and subtitled video, indicating violence on 27th and trying to blame BJP for it,” Malviya posted on X.

TMC had posted a purported sting op video alleging that plans were being hatched to ensure “dead bodies” at the rally for political mileage.

“We think that the video is morphed and is being floated to intimidate students. In fact, we apprehend violence by TMC workers and police. However, if there is a single case of violence on students, BJP will hold a rally to Nabanna,” Majumdar said.
