• ‘Chhatra Samaj’ march an attempt to create chaos, incite unrest: TMC

  • Kolkata: The proposed ‘Chhatra Samaj’ march to Nabanna was illegal and an attempt to incite widespread unrest in Kolkata, Trinamool Congress said on Monday.

“No student body would jeopardise the future of students by staging a protest on the very day they are scheduled to appear for an examination. Under the banner of Chhatra Samaj, BJP has hijacked ‘Nabanna Abhiyan’, filling it with anti-social elements to incite violence,” the party posted on X.“(BJP) In their desperation to claw back power in Bengal, view the RG Kar tragedy as their golden opportunity to exploit, uncaring about the cost. Bengal, be on guard — these vultures are circling, ready to pounce on any chance to plunge our state into chaos!” TMC added.

At a press conference at Trinamool Bhavan, senior minister Chandrima Bhattacharya along with Kunal Ghosh and Joyprakash Majumdar, said the rally had been called without police permission. The minister said it was part of a plan by some elements to disrupt peace and stability.

“The rally was organised through social media channels by Chhatra Samaj without prior notification to law enforcement authorities. The participants united in their pursuit of justice for the victim... The investigation has been handed over to CBI. However, some individuals have raised demands for the CM’s resignation. They are believed to be influenced by political considerations rather than a genuine concern for the victim,” Bhattacharya said.

TMC suggested participants from outside the state could join the rally, and some may even go so far as to impersonate law enforcement personnel to spark violence and tarnish the reputation of the state police force.

“A blueprint for creating chaos is being prepared... BJP is trying to create a plot for Centre to intervene. The saffron brigade is attempting to create chaos by entering through the back door after failing to win the elections. The video that has surfaced shows that they are trying to dispose of bodies through this programme. BJP is engaging in vulture politics,” Ghosh said.

Majumdar said: “Certain groups, predominantly right-wing organisations like RSS and ABVP, along with a few Leftists supported by CPM, have revealed their true intentions through videos that have surfaced. Their ultimate goal is to cause fatalities. Reports suggest individuals from beyond state borders are being transported to instigate chaos. There is intelligence indicating some participants will be disguised in police uniforms. Their plan is to open fire on the crowd, with the aim of shifting the blame onto state police.”

Trinamool added atrocities against women were ramp-ant, especially in “double-engine states” run by BJP, yet no one demanded resignation of CMs there. “So why is Mamata Banerjee being attacked relentlessly? Because she’s the only female CM daring to stand up to the culture of patriarchy?” the party said on X.

TMCP state president Trinankur Bhattacharya said there was no organisation called ‘Chhatra Samaj’. “These are just nameplates of ABVP’s backdoor. Shubhankar Haldar is the president of ABVP’s Nabadwip branch, and there are multiple allegations against him,” Bhattacharya said.
