According to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Roy’s polygraph test was crucial in solving the rape and murder case to determine if it was a gang rape or the act of a single perpetrator. Through the test, the CBI wanted to determine whether Roy was truthful in his statement regarding the case. On Saturday, Sandip Ghosh, former principal of R G Kar Medical College, underwent a polygraph test.
An officer’s office in the corner of the jail was prepared for the lie-detection test, with tables and files cleared out. “The CBI officers wanted a soundproof room for the polygraph test. We cleared a room meant for a senior jail officer. That is the one where the least noise comes out. We also tried to make it as soundproof as possible, bolting the doors and windows. We have cleared the table of files, computers and everything and decked up the room for the test,” said a Presidency central jail senior official.
“Two CBI officers were conducting the test. It started a little after noon. We have been told that six to seven hours were required for the polygraph test,” said a jail official.
Roy, The civic volunteer attached to Kolkata police, was arrested on August 10, a day after the victim was found dead in a seminar hall at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital. Later, the CBI, which took over the probe following a Calcutta High Court order, interrogated Roy.
Roy was taken to jail on Friday evening after a Sealdah court granted the police 14 days of judicial custody. He has been lodged at the Presidency central jail’s high-security ‘Poila Baish’ cell block.
This cell block has former education and industries minister Partha Chatterjee, former food minister, among others. The cell block inside the jail is highly guarded and normal inmates are not allowed inside.
Jail authorities said that since this is a high profile case, there was apprehension that Roy might be harmed by other undertrials and convicts if kept in the general area or in other wards inside the jail.
According to jail officials, Roy did not demand anything after he was taken to his cell. He was also having normal jail food.
Roy has been put in cell 21, Partha Chatterjee in cell 2, and Mullick in cell 7. Chatterjee is in jail following the CBI investigation into the school recruitment scam, while Jyotipriyo Mullick is behind bars for his alleged involvement in a ration scam.
