  • Cop arrangements at two likely starting points at Santragachhi (left) and College Square KOLKATA: Kolkata Traffic Police has lined up plans to ensure that citizens — especially students appearing for UGC-NET exams — get to reach their destinations on time even as several roads in Howrah and Kolkata may witness traffic restrictions due to the Nabanna march called by two organizations.

According to Lalbazar sources, cops have already banned movement of trucks from 4 am across several roads in central, south and Port areas.Guard rails and cross-scissor bamboo barricades will be set up at seven locations — Esplanade crossing, Hastings crossing, Second Hooghly Bridge, Santragachhi crossing, Howrah Bridge, Howrah Shibpur and Mandirtala crossing. Special steel barricades have been set up by KMC and PWD at Furlong Road, Turf View and Hastings.

Police commissioner Vineet Goyal was out on the streets on Monday evening to take stock of the preparations.

“Once the rally begins, we expect disruptions in all Kolkata-Howrah links, including Vidyasagar Setu and Howrah Bridge. For those coming from north, we will advise them to take Nivedita Setu to enter Howrah. For those travelling from south to Howrah or Kona, it is important to reach their destinations by noon,” said an officer.

Cops have advised motorists to avoid multiple roads post noon for around three to four hours across Vidyasagar Setu and its ramps, Kidderpore Road, Taratala Road, D H Road, Circular Garden Reach Road and Garden Reach Road.

Howrah may be the worst hit. Roads to be affected are Alampur crossing, Nibra 2 Point, Salap, area in front of Howrah new complex and Kolkata-bound vehicles at Belgachhia. Curbs will be in place on 21 roads.
