THE WEST Bengal Commission for Protection of Child Rights (WBCPCR) has taken cognisance of a “threat” that a protester allegedly issued to a Trinamool Congress leader’s minor daughter during a demonstration against the rape and murder of a junior doctor at Kolkata’s R G Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.
The commission, which took note of the matter after a video purportedly showing a protester issuing the threat surfaced online, called for “police and judicial action” under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, the Juvenile Justice Act and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child against the man and other demonstrators who were seen cheering him on.
“This can put not just the minor girl in question but all minor girls at risk. The Commission requests the police to arrest the culprits and give adequate protection to the minor in question,” it said in a statement, adding that failure to take punitive measures would send out a “dangerous message.”
“While the entire state is mourning the sad demise of the doctor at RG Kar Hosptial, calling for another rape to settle scores is clearly violative of the law and could send out a dangerous message to society if punitive measures are not taken. This can put not just the minor girl in question but all minor girls at risk,” it said.
WBCPCR chairperson Tulika Das also wrote to the Basirhat police district chief to take action.
TMC Rajya Sabha MP Derek O’Brian wrote on X, “Fight us politically with your filthy tricks. You have done it before. But today you have crossed the line. Stop threatening kids. No words enough to condemn the gutter level threats to our leader’s daughter. Stop this now.”
