  • Kolkata: Even as barricades, rallies and clashes disrupted lives in parts of central Kolkata, the rest of the city — especially east of APC Road — was nearly normal. The Sector V, New Town and Rajarhat IT hubs functioned normally and employees had no major problem in reaching their offices.

“I was apprehensive about reaching my New Town office from Garia. But I was assured by colleagues that the protest will be confined to central Kolkata and Howrah. Thankfully, despite the drizzle, my shuttle service was not cancelled and I could reach office before time as the roads were comparatively empty,” said Priyanka Sarkar.

Susovan Sen, a Thakurpukur resident, said he reached his bank in Shyambazar on Tuesday in a govt bus without much trouble. “There were some delays due to the barricades put up around Hastings. Otherwise, it was a smooth ride. While returning home, I took the Metro,” said Sen.

Private company official and a Baguiati resident Sudipta Chaudhuri said, “There was no disruption on this side of the city. I dropped my daughter off at college and then reached my office in New Town.” Another official of a private insurance company and resident of Salt Lake Kawshik Dutta said that he went to office as usual on his bike from Salt Lake to Dum Dum Motijheel.

Academic fellow at West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences Atish Chakraborty took a public bus from his home near Salt Lake City Centre to reach the university without facing any problem. Another resident of Salt Lake and an official of a private company Tamal Pal said, “Everything was completely normal this side as I drove to office from my Salt Lake home to New Town. In fact, traffic in Sector V was much less than other days.”

Lake Town resident and school teacher Tulika Biswas said, “I was worried about reaching my workplace in New Alipore but fortunately I didn’t face any trouble. I took the metro as usual and it was a smooth journey.”Cops said the east-west movement was one of the smoothest in recent times.

“The private buses on this alignment were not hit much except some disruptions around Patuli for a short duration,” said a senior traffic cop.
