  • Kolkata: Trinamool plans to field at least 55% women candidates in student union elections at educational institutions which may be held after Durga Puja.

While speaking at TMCP’s Foundation Day event at Mayo Road on Wednesday, Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee said she would ask education minister Bratya Basu to soon come up with the poll schedule.

“Education system has undergone changes. From being one full year of academics, it has now been divided in to semesters. Elections to the student unions are also necessary. I will ask Bratya Basu to prepare a schedule of the election process and we can use that after the Pujas,” said CM Banerjee.

Party general secretary Abhishek Banerjee said he would request TMCP to nominate 55% women in its candidate lists across colleges and universities. “We will ensure that the women stay at the forefront of our struggle. What Bengal thinks today, India thinks tomorrow. BJP introduced the women reservation bill but nothing came with it. In contrast, 12 of our 29 MPs are women. We have ensured that 50% of our panchayat members are women. In educational institutes, we will take this beyond 50%,” he said.

CM Banerjee recounted her student activism days at Asutosh College, adding that she had been attacked numerous times while protesting. “I was born in movements and I will die while participating in a movement,” she said.
