  • Kolkata: After spells of incessant rain, several stretches of the city’s major thoroughfares have developed potholes, which pose a threat to bikers, especially on streets that get waterlogged after a heavy shower.

Stretches of some roads that have become cratered include Chittaranjan Avenue, MG Road, Syed Amir Ali Avenue, Diamond Harbour Road (Mominpore crossing), Circular Garden Road, Brabourne Road, Anwar Shah Road and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose (Tollygunge) Road. Some of the approach roads to the city bridges and flyovers have also developed potholes. The approach road to bridge no 4 (Park Circus), Sealdah flyover, the approach road to Howrah bridge have also developed potholes.

This was after heavy rains lashed the city, especially from Tuesday, damaging the top layer of the roads further affecting the normal movement of vehicles on these stretches. Other roads that have reported maximum damaged spots include S.N. Banerjee Road, Alipore Road, Motilal Gupta Road, and MG Road (way to Thakurpukur cancer hospital).

According to a KMC roads department official, the civic body has identified stretches of roads which have been worst hit by the showers. “We need to take special care of the roads that have been damaged due to the showers and digging as well. Stretches of Syed Amir Ali Avenue, Road, Diamond Harbour Road, NSC Bose Road (Tollygunge), Deshapran Sashmal Road, CGR Road, parts of EM Bypass and its adjoining roads will need to undergo a repair drive,” said an official.

However, several roads that fall under the jurisdiction of the state or central agencies may not come under KMC’s drive, the official said. A section of the KMC roads department officials has expressed apprehension about the condition of roads in the port area as well. Cops also want the civic body to take care of two arterial roads- Diamond Harbour Road and EM Bypass. “Several stretches on EM Bypass have developed potholes and we need to take care of them without delay. Similar plea has been made by the local guard between Coalberth Road and CGR Road,” said a KMC official.
