  • Kolkata: Cops have arrested 21 people on Wednesday for allegedly attacking police personnel, setting property on fire and indulging in violence during the Nabanna abhijan programme on Tuesday. Among them are Subhankar Haldar and Sayan Lahiri, the two main organisers representing Paschim Banga Chhatra Samaj. Haldar and Lahiri have confessed to having links with ABVP and RSS.Both have been sent to 14 days’ police custody. Cops are still searching for another key organizer, Prabir Das.

    The total arrests in the city under serious charges in this connection has touched 147. In addition, 17 people have been arrested for disobeying instructions and charged under minor sections. Wednesday’s arrests were made based on CCTV and video footage from multiple sources.

    The main organisers have been charged with attempt to murder along with BNS sections pertaining to attack on cops and unlawful assembly.

    So far, police have registered 13 FIRs across 10 police stations. One among them is by the RPF which claimed one of their inspectors and a constable were assaulted by a mob near Gwalior Ghat.
