  • CBI sleuths visited the morgue at RG Kar Hospital on Thursday KOLKATA: Investigation into the alleged financial irregularities at the RG Kar Hospital led the CBI sleuths to step up the probe and visit the morgue there on Thursday.

The agency, which is also looking into the rape and murder of the 31-year-old PGT doctor, conducted polygraph test on two security guards, who were posted on duty on August 8 night and continued till the wee hours of August 9.

Their statements are crucial to establish the number of persons involved in the crime, CBI sources said.

Earlier, the CBI had come across allegations of illegal selling of unclaimed bodies by the hospital authorities. The CBI officials visited the morgue to understand how the racket under former principal, Sandip Ghosh, allegedly conducted the business of corpses.

One of the complainants against the hospital, Akhtar Ali, went to the anti-corruption branch of CBI at Nizam Palace on Thursday. Ali in his complaint with the anti-corruption branch of the West Bengal Police mentioned that apart from giving out tenders to a select few contractors, a clutch of officials at the medical college were involved in "squandering government money". Ali, who was earlier a deputy superintendent of the same medical college, alleged that Ghosh deliberately evaded financial rules to provide tenders to three specific vendors. Contracts for civil and electrical works were given to third parties, instead of the PWD department. In a bid to stay out of any inquiry radar, he allegedly split the orders and kept those below Rs 1 lakh.

The clutch of administrators, led by Ghosh, had also been allegedly running a 'benami' business in the form of collection of two-wheeler parking fees bypassing the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, ran a canteen at the boy's main hostel and a cafeteria on the campus. Ali also alleged illegal selling of biomedical waste by the group.
