Kolkata: A hospital, where a patient underwent an operation apparently to remove a cancerous growth in her stomach though it was later found non-existent, has been asked to forego the surgery charge. The directive came from West Bengal Clinical Establishment Regulatory Commission. The family has also lodged a complaint with West Bengal Medical Council.
The patient was admitted to Remedy Hospital in south Kolkata with acute abdominal pain.
Doctors asked for a colonoscopy, which suggested a cancerous growth. Based on the report, an onco-surgeon reportedly said the growth could be cancerous and required surgery. But the surgery revealed she did not have any growth. “As the surgery was wrongly done, the patient should be compensated. Since a complaint has been lodged with Medical Council, we are not issuing a judgment now. We told the hospital not to charge the surgery bill,” said Justice Asim Banerjee, chairperson, WBCERC. tnn
