Health dept appoints CNMC chest med head as principal

Kolkata: State health department has appointed a professor of chest medicine as the principal at Calcutta National Medical College (CNMC). The move comes as present principal Ajay Ray superannuates on Saturday. Professor Subhra Mitra will now take charge as the principal.
Officials said Mitra is the head of CNMC chest medicine department.
The transfer of Sandip Ghosh from R G Kar Medical College and Hospital to CNMC as its principal on the very same day Ghosh had resigned had caused a massive furore among medical students as well as the medical fraternity.
The health department had first transferred Ray as OSD at Swasthya Bhawan to make way for Ghosh. Protests erupted among CNMC students, who said they won’t allow ‘RG Kar’s garbage’ to be dumped on their campus. With the Calcutta High Court asking the health department to send Ghosh on long leave, Ray was again brought back as CNMC principal. According to officials, Ghosh, who is being questioned by CBI, is on extraordinary long leave.
