CPI(M) YOUTH leader Minakshi Mukherjee has filed a complaint with Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal alleging that a police officer allegedly “manhandled” her during a protest at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital earlier this month. A senior police officer said on Friday that “enquiries are on” into the complaint.
On August 9, after being informed about the rape and murder of a woman trainee doctor at R G Kar Hospital, Minakshi Mukherjee, who is DYFI state secretary, DYFI leader Kalatan Dasgupta and some supporters reached the spot and stopped a vehicle that was carrying the doctor’s body for cremation. They were demanding preservation of the body for further investigation and postmortem.
During that protest, some police personnel scuffled with Mukherjee to remove her from the front of the vehicle. Some male police officers allegedly beat her up, she alleged in her complaint.
She has urged Commissioner Goyal to seek necessary action against the police personnel concerned. Additional Commissioner of Kolkata Police Murlidhar Sharma told The Indian Express that they are looking into Mukherjee’s complaint.
“In West Bengal, the police have lost their credibility. The administration system has collapsed. We are facing such humiliation everyday during our movement. Sometimes, even in the presence of female police personnel, male police attack our female workers. I don’t know which state we are living in,” Mukherjee told The Indian Express.
She alleged that rapes and murders happen “frequently in West Bengal, even after the R G Kar incident”. “Not only do the police fail to stop such crimes, they also fail to arrest such criminals. If the police can’t do anything against any crime then what is the necessity of a policing system! Why should criminals fear the police?” Mukherjee said.
CPIM state secretary Md Selim Thursday wrote on X, “@CPKolkata, Have you identified this who was caught red handed. @KolkataPolice was busy helping #TMCgoons for quick cremation on the very first day…”
