Kolkata: At least nine police personnel, including a sub-inspector, were attacked and injured by a group of miscreants during a raid to arrest a rape accused at Hasnabad in North 24 Parganas on Friday night.
At least three policemen sustained serious injuries. They have been admitted in hospital. However, despite the resistance, cops managed to arrest two persons on Saturday morning.
While police lodged an FIR following the attack, naming 20 persons, Rakesh Sheikh, the prime accused in the rape case, is at large.
Sources said the incident took place around 11.30 pm when a police team from Murarisha outpost led by SI Bharat Prasun Kar raided Kharampur village to nab Sheikh. A 30-year-old woman had lodged a rape complaint against him.
“During the raid, the accused and his associates deliberately attacked cops, leaving nine of them, including the SI, injured. Two persons were arrested for being involved in the attack. Raids are on to nab the others, including the accused in the rape complaint,” Basirhat SP Hossain Mehedi Rehman said.
