Police have arrested one person, indicating a possible business rivalry as the motive. NEW DELHI: A man was shot dead by two motorcycle-borne gunmen on Saturday night in the New Town area on the eastern fringes of Kolkata, according to the police. The shooting occurred near a tea stall close to Ram Mandir, and the victim was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Bidhannagar Subdivisional Hospital. The initial investigation suggests the murder might have stemmed from a business rivalry.

Police said the incident happened when the man was at a tea stall and two assailants approached and fired at him. "One person was arrested for allegedly being involved in the murder. An investigation is underway. Prima facie, the murder was due to a business rivalry," an officer stated.

The identity of the deceased man is yet to be determined. Locals have claimed that he was involved in the coal and bricks trade.

Reacting to the incident, West Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar raised concerns about the law and order situation in the state. "Is this West Bengal or Mini Pakistan? A person was brutally shot dead at point-blank range near Ram Temple Island in New Town. Despite the audacity of the crime, the killers remain at large," he posted on X.
