  • Kolkata: State school education department has deferred the Teachers’ Day programme which was scheduled to be held at Biswa Bangla Mela Prangan. A section of the teaching community is considering the matter due to the present situation in Kolkata.

Sources said a number of meetings were held in last few days and the decision was taken on Saturday.

Sources said over 600 students, who topped boards, including Madhyamik, HS, High Madrasa, Alim, Fazil and West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations, and the top five scorers in ICSE, ISC, CBSE class X and XII, were to be felicitated in the programme by CM Mamata Banerjee.

The state also has plans facilitate over 70 teachers of schools and colleges, honouring them with ‘Shiksha Ratna’. Thirteen schools across Bengal will also be handed special prize for their outstanding performance.

The decision has been taken by the top officials after closely monitoring the situation in the city that, they felt, could impact the programme.

A message was forwarded to the district inspectors of schools across Bengal, only mentioning that the programme was deferred without stating any rescheduled date. An official of the school education department said, “The situation is not favourable to organise any programme.” Sources said a message from the CM will be circulated to the schools and college principals will be given flowers and sweets as a token of respect on Sept 5.
