  • Kolkata: Twenty-four days and counting, the agitating junior doctors are showing no signs of retreat to resume work. They will be stepping up their agitation as the week begins, with the West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Front (WBJDF) deciding to march to Lalbazar, the Kolkata Police’s headquarters on Monday to intensify their demand for justice.

“Our demands for speedy probe to CBI, arrest of all involved in the crime, suspension of RG Kar Medical College ex-principal Sandip Ghosh, resignation of Kolkata Police commissioner to the Bengal govt still remain,” said a junior doctor.

Their demands also include bringing each person involved in ‘tampering with’ evidence under investigation. “The likes of Birupaksha Biswas and Avik De continue to threaten medical students and even teachers. The health department has to see that such culture is uprooted from medical colleges,” said another junior doctor.

“While we are disheartened with delay in getting justice, which is our primary goal, our resolve to advocate our right remains strong,” said a statement from WBJDF indicating that they are not calling off the agitation for now.

Junior doctors said they will be keeping an eye on the Supreme Court hearing on the case which is expected on Thursday. They said a lot will depend on what emerges from the court on that day, on their decision for the next course of action.

The Lalbazar march may be attended by many senior doctors and also see participation by the public.

On Sunday evening, they also organised cultural events at two shopping malls in the city for public outreach. They have also appealed to the public to switch off lights at home and come out on streets with candles to form human chains on Thursday night.
