  • Kolkata: Calcutta High Court on Monday directed West Bengal Board of Primary Education (WBBPE) to set up a new appeal committee by Sept 18 to hear out a teacher of a state-run primary school in South 24 Parganas, who had been unable to go to work for the last 14 months.

The teacher, who is part of the transgender community, alleged that she had not been getting her salary for 14 months after being placed under suspension by the district primary school council. The teacher had been part of anti-govt protests over dearness allowance.

The teacher said the chargesheet issued against her ahead of the suspension didn’t mention her offence. Her counsel also pointed out that the maximum punishment for the alleged offence was three months.

The counsel submitted that the teacher had knocked on the doors of the WBBPE appeal committee and come to know the internal panel was not functioning. The WBBPE counsel submitted that the internal appeal committee had become inoperative in 2022 after the transfer of the chairman.
