• Pillion rider flung 40ft down Maa, dies

  • Kolkata: A 21-year-old pillion rider lost his life in an accident, after he fell off the Maa flyover on Wednesday morning near the Garia ramp bifurcation above Science City. The victim was wearing a helmet but it had come off in the impact of the fall that was more than 12 m, or nearly 40 ft.

    Cops said the biker, Deep Srivastav (21) and the victim, Kesab Jha, were speeding towards their home after a joyride from the Maidan area.Jha, a resident of Rail Colony Mandir in Anandapur, was taken to SSKM Hospital where he was declared dead.

    “It seems the rider tried to overtake a vehicle from the left but lost control of the bike. As a result, he dashed the side wall of the flyover. Jha was flung from his seat and fell over the boundary walls. He was spotted by some gardeners on the road below. Pragati Maidan police will be carrying out mechanical tests on the bike. A probe is on,” said DC (East) Arish Bilal.

    “I was driving on the Park Circus Connector when I saw the man lying motionless and bleeding from his head, nose and ears,” said Arijit Sinha, a witness.

    This is the second such accident on the flyover.
