  • Junior doctors agitate at RG Kar protest site on Wednesday KOLKATA: The cancellation of the Supreme Court’s hearing of the RG Kar Medical College rape-murder case on Thursday left the agitating junior doctors disheartened on Wednesday. Most of them were eagerly waiting for the hearing and had hoped to see some progress in the case. They said they would patiently wait for the next date. Till reports last came in, the date for the next hearing had not been announced.

    RG Kar doctors announce cease-work

“We were looking forward to the Thursday hearing, hoping to know what was the outcome of the interrogations till date. But now, we will have to wait for the next date,” said Aniket Mahata, first-year PGT at RG Kar hospital.

Junior doctors said a lot would depend on what the CBI deposes before the court in the next hearing, on whether they end their agitation or continue with their cease-work. The last time the SC took up the matter was on Aug 20.

“We were hopeful of hearing something positive from the CBI during the Thursday hearing. It would have helped in charting our next course of action,” said Mrinmoy Basak, third-year PGT at Calcutta National Medical College. “We were expecting some clarity during Thursday’s hearing. For now, our agitation continues,” said Anustup Mukherjee, endocrinology PDT at Medical Hospital, Kolkata.

Some junior students were even planning to organise projectors in their respective protest sites so that they could watch the court proceedings together. “We will keep our eyes on the next hearing. It has been more than three weeks that we have stayed away from work. We want to go back to patient care services. But that is possible only when we see a ray of hope for justice,” said a PGT doctor at NRS Medical College.

The West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Front will hold a general body meeting on Thursday to decide on their next course of protest.
