• ‘Stop sale of juvenile hilsa’

  • Kolkata: Scientists of ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (CIFRI), Barrackpore called for a need to stop the sale of juvenile hilsa that is flooding markets in the city and suburbs.

    On Thursday, the scientists reached out to around 200 hilsa fishermen from Diamond Harbour, Godakhali, Balagarh, Falta, Kolaghat, Kalyani, Konnagar, Sundarbans, Namkhana, Nawab Ganj among other places at a seminar on hilsa conservation, which was held by the institute at Barrackpore.

    B K Das, director of the institute told TOI: “Despite a govt ban several trawlers are flouting it in Diamond Harbour, Namkhana and Kakdwip. We are requesting the administration to take cognizance of this matter.” TNN
