  • Kolkata: A class XI girl participating in the ‘Reclaim the Night’ protest in Kanchrapara was allegedly brutally attacked on Wednesday night by a group of drunken youths. The girl sustained fractures and was admitted to Kalyani JNM Hospital. Her family lodged a police complaint but none has been arrested yet.

In another incident at Barasat’s Dukbunglow More, an inebriated youth in his early 30s was arrested for passing lewd comments at two women returning home after a protest rally on Wednesday night. The man also attacked the women and their family member for resisting. Locals beat up the accused before handing him over to police.

The Kanchrapara incident took place around 10.30 pm. “The event was being led by the 17-year-old girl. We took out the rally peacefully. While passing Gandhi More, a group of five-six youths, all of them inebriated, snatched the microphone from the girl. When she tried to take it back, the goons attacked her, fracturing her hand,” said Debolina Nandy, a local.

Locals said that while the girl’s family members and neighbours came to her rescue, the youths attacked them and threatened them with dire consequences if they dared to raise their voice. The girl said, “I tried my best to protest but they attacked me, twisting my arm and punching me.” “We received a complaint and a raid is on to nab the accused,” said an officer.
