• Cops send urgent pre-puja road-repair missive to KMC

  • Kolkata: Kolkata Traffic Police has sent a pre-monsoon repair SOS to civic agencies – including KMC, PWD and Port – for the immediate repair of 264 spots lying across the city, up from the 201 listed last year. The KMC though has stated that repair work on 131 of these spots has already begun.

TOI has accessed the list that includes some of the most important stretches like Park Circus (near Bridge Number 4), Diamond Harbour Road, a section of BT Road, MG Road, Strand Road, and Brabourne Road among others.

Some of the smaller but extremely busy stretches that require repairs have been identified as Canning Road, Pollock Road, Coal Berth Road and Dock East Boundary Road. A portion of CIT Road and Biren Roy Road West too feature in the list.

The stretches were identified based on two aspects – one, after several complaints on these stretches from commuters and two, inspection by the traffic beat officers themselves who were posted at each guard.

“We wanted this to be treated urgently by the civic agencies. Hence, instead of listing merely the roads – an annual exercise which we have completed earlier before Durga Puja – we have identified specific spots where temporary work can save us a lot of pain as the monsoon season ends,” said a senior officer.

Senior officers said the entire list includes stretches that mostly need minor patchwork.

Police sources are especially worried about the roads in the Port and added areas which might get worse in the coming days.

“The potholes formed are still small ones but can be especially dangerous for two-wheeler riders who are often slipping in these potholes leading to minor accidents,” said an officer from a north Kolkata traffic guard.

After the traffic department of Kolkata Police has now pinpointed the bad and broken roads, the civic agencies are expected to swing into action. A few of these stretches have already witnessed the commissioning of the repairs too, said officers.
