  • Derek O'Brien NEW DELHI: Senior TMC leader Derek O'Brien on Friday questioned the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) about the status of the chargesheet in the RG Kar hospital rape-murder case.

The TMC has been pressing for the CBI to file the chargesheet promptly. The Calcutta high court had transferred the investigation from Kolkata Police to the CBI in August.

O'Brien posted on X, "When is CBI filing a charge-sheet in the RG Kar hospital rape and murder case and putting the accused on trial? When?"

For the past few days, the TMC has been demanding that the CBI file the charge-sheet at the earliest.

The main accused, a civic volunteer, was arrested by the police a day after the incident on August 9.

SC dismisses plea of ex-principal Sandip Ghosh

Earlier, former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital Sandip Ghosh on Wednesday moved the Supreme Court challenging the Calcutta high court's order to transfer his corruption case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

On Friday, the Supreme Court dismissed the petition filed by Sandip Ghosh. Ghosh had challenged a Calcutta high court decision that mandated an investigation by the CBI into his alleged financial irregularities during his controversial tenure at the hospital.

The Supreme Court ruled that Sandip Ghosh does not have the standing to be impleaded as a party. The court dismissed Ghosh’s plea challenging the high court's order.

The high court had directed the CBI to take over the investigation into corruption charges against Sandip Ghosh from a Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed by the Bengal government.

The court had reasoned that a single agency should handle all allegations against Ghosh.

"The investigations (into the rape-murder at RG Kar hospital and the graft charges against the ex-principal) should not be fragmented between different agencies. Handing over the investigation to the CBI ensures consistency," it said in its order.

Ghosh, who is already under CBI investigation for his actions following the August 9 rape-murder of a junior doctor on campus, faces mounting accusations of financial and administrative misconduct.
