• Five get life term for robbery & murder, threaten cop, PP

  • Kolkata: Five persons, convicted in a jewellery showroom robbery and subsequent murder of its owner in Barrackpore and awarded life imprisonment, openly threatened the investigating officer and the public prosecutor on Barrackpore court premises on Friday.

    They all had smiles on their faces. Police said a fresh FIR was lodged against them for resorting to threats on court premises.

    The five — Rajbir Singh alias Rana, from Jalandhar, Punjab; Asif Khan alias Asish, from Jagatsingpur, Odisha; Jamsed Ansari from Sahibganj, Jharkhand; Uttam Upadhya from Patna, Bihar; Safi Khan alias Sonu from Rahara in Khardah — were found guilty of the robbery at a jewellery showroom off Old Calcutta Road and the murder of its owner Niladri Singh (32) on May 24, 2023.Cops may to move Calcutta HC, seeking capital punishment for the convicted.

    According to police, on May 24, 2023, five armed robbers barged into the jewellery shop and looted gold ornaments. The miscreants also started firing, leaving Singh and a security guard injured. Singh was declared brought dead at a hospital.

    Bivas Chatterjee, the special public prosecutor, said all five were convicted for dacoity and murder, attempt to murder and other offences on Aug 31 where, for the first time in India, a bluetooth device was used to prove one of the offenders guilty.
