  • The West Bengal Health Department on Thursday suspended two doctors of Burdwan Medical College, who were allegedly close associates of Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in CBI custody in connection with corruption cases.

The suspension of Dr Birupakha Biswas and Dr Avik Dey comes three days after the CBI arrested Ghosh and three others in connection with the CBI probe ordered by the Calcutta High Court order.

“De, an RMO in the Radiodiagnosis Department of Burdwan Medical College has been placed under suspension with immediate effect pending departmental proceeding until further order,” the Health Department notification stated.

Sources said that a group of doctors and medical students had earlier complained against Dr Biswas, a senior resident doctor in the pathology department at Burdwan Medical College.

Earlier, the Trinamool Student Council barred Dey from entering Burdwan Medical College following allegations that he was seen at RG Kar Medical College on the day when the rape and murder of the junior doctor took place.

Meanwhile, a letter has surfaced purportedly showing that Sandip Ghosh had ordered renovation of rooms adjacent to the crime scene at RG Kar Hospital.

The purported letter was addressed to the Public Works Department (PWD), on August 10, a day after the 31-year-old trainee doctor was found dead.

The Opposition parties have accused Ghosh was being involved in tampering of evidence.

“The order, signed by Sandip Ghosh, former director of RG Kar Medical College, is dated August 10, just one day after the

victim’s death. Despite allegations from colleagues and protesters about tampering with the crime scene, the Police Commissioner denied it. @CBIHeadquarters… It can’t be done by such small government employees like executive engineers of PWD and others until and unless they get a green signal from the upper level. So, the CBI should investigate how the top level of state administration is involved in tampering of evidence,” Leader of Opposition in Assembly Suvendu Adhikari posted on X.

However, TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said, “We can’t say what this letter is, whether this letter is authentic or not.  The CBI is investigating the whole matter. If anything wrong happened, the CBI should take proper steps. Those who have this letter, instead of giving it to social media, they should give it to the CBI.”
