Kolkata: The state home department plans a 45-day training programme for 1.2 lakh civic volunteers attached with Bengal and Kolkata police.
The aim, said an officer, was to sensitise them, discipline them and teach them the various rules so that they act responsibly and do not tarnish the force’s image.
The training has been planned following the recent arrests of civic volunteers for various crimes, including the R G Kar case.
“When the civic volunteers join the force, they do not receive proper training,” said an officer. “Civic volunteers mostly help cops in traffic management but some are involved in other policing duties. According to an HC order, they are not supposed to be deployed for law-and-order duties.” tnn
