Kolkata: Junior doctors, who had called for the resignation of the Kolkata Police commissioner and marched to Lalbazar last week, have demanded an investigation into the conduct of the deputy commissioner of North division after the RG Kar victim’s parents claimed the officer had offered them cash and that the force had been overactive in ensuring a speedy cremation.
Soon after the bribe allegation had surfaced on Aug 11, Kolkata Police had denied it was bribe. Police had then said they had tried to assure the family of every help due to them. But police have not commented after the parents reiterated the bribe allegation on Sept 4.
Doctors demanded a probe into the actions of senior health officials, who had on Aug 10, approved the razing of the doctors’ room and toilet near the seminar hall, where the PGT’s body was found on Aug 9. “We are dissatisfied and angry with the way they have kept the probe process opaque to us, the general public. We demand they swiftly clarify the steps,” a doctor said. —Sumati Yengkhom
