  • KOLKATA: On Saturday, the West Bengal Medical Council (WBMC) served a show-cause notice to R G Kar Medical College ex-principal Sandip Ghosh asking his clarification on the charges of several irregularities against him.

The council has asked Ghosh to respond in three days. In case of a failure to reply within the stipulated time or his explanation is not satisfactory, the council may cancel his registration.Ghosh currently is in the CBI custody.

From charge of corruption to allegation of evidence tampering in the rape-murder horror of a 31-year-old PGT, skeletons continue to tumble out against Ghosh.

Despite the cry for his suspension from medical education, the health department suspended him only a day after his arrest by CBI as it was left with no option.

“We will take appropriate action against Ghosh if he does not respond to the show-cause or his response is not satisfactory,” said an official of the council.

A few days ago the WBMC removed doctors Avik De and Birupaksha Biswas from its penal and ethics committee. Both are known to be close to Ghosh and their names too have cropped up several times in the aftermath of the R G Kar incident as part of the ‘health syndicate’ that allegedly intimidates doctors as well as students who do not toe their line. Ghosh is also a member of the council’s penal and ethics committee.

“These notices and removal of a few from the penal and ethics committee is a mere eyewash. This is orchestrated by masterminds behind the cover-up of the heinous rape and murder who are also responsible for the threat culture and corruption in the system. In fact, WBMC is now the breeding ground of the threat syndicate which needs to be dismantled and new elections must be held,” said a member of the Joint Platform of Doctors West Bengal.
