  • Kolkata: All the 15 overhead water tanks across Salt Lake are undergoing major upgradation work for the first time since the inception of the township.

The work has been taken up by the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC).

The tanks, which supply filtered water to over 26,000 households, several commercial establishments and offices, are undergoing retrofitting, mechanical and electro-civil repair along with replacement of the old pumps.

The work is being done with funds sanctioned under the Centre’s AMRUT scheme.

Each of the tanks has a capacity of 1.2 lakh gallon. Minor technical glitches in the water tank machines and allied equipment used to occur occasionally, causing disruptions in water supply.

Besides, many of the tanks are in a dilapidated state as locals often complain of concrete chunks falling off from these. With water supply needs increasing manifold due to population swells, the civic authorities felt the need for a thorough overhaul.

“Previously, the tanks were repaired one at a time, as and when it was required. The repair involved civil work. This is for the first time that all the tanks will be upgraded at the same time. Ground-level reservoirs, including the boundary walls, tank structure and the dome on top, will also be repaired ,” said BMC MMIC (water supply), Tulsi Sinha Roy, adding that the work is expected to be completed by the middle of next year.

Civic officials said water supplied to the households might have less pressure occasionally due to the ongoing works. The civic authorities were informing the localities about the same, in advance, through WhatsApp groups.

BMC has also initiated the process to select agencies for executing the AMRUT 2.0 scheme, in which 14 elevated service water reservoirs and four underground reservoirs along with filtered water distribution network will be set up for BMC wards 1 to 21, covering Rajarhat-Gopalpur area for supplying filtered potable water from the New Town treatment plant.
