  • Kolkata: Hours after a petitioner alleged in the Supreme Court that the restroom near the seminar hall at RG Kar might have been demolished to destroy evidence, the CBI reached the hospital to go through the crime scene and areas around it once again.

The petitioner’s lawyer alleged that the room was destroyed a day after the rape-murder and new tiles were fitted. He had also alleged that a wash basin had been dismantled. In the afternoon, the CBI team reached the hospital and went straight to the Emergency building. They surveyed the entire area to find out if any wash basin was dismantled to destroy any proof. The petitioner’s lawyer, Phiroze Edulji, told the SC that a luminol test of the toilet might have given some more leads.

The instruction to demolish the room and the toilet had been given by former principal Sandip Ghosh on Aug 10. The decision to undertake the renovation was taken when the campus was on the boil over the rape-murder.

The investigators, waiting for the final opinion of AIIMS and other CFSL laboratories about DNA samples, felt the samples might have been contaminated in case they had not been preserved at 4ºC. While the CBI officials were leaving the hospital, three women and a youth started agitating in front of the CISF jawans posted at the gate. Meanwhile, ED, probing the alleged financial crime at the RG Kar, questioned Ghosh’s wife on Monday. The agency is trying to find out if Ghosh had accumulated property in her name.
