  • Kolkata: The Supreme Court on Monday directed the state to nominate a senior officer from the home department to liaise with a senior officer from CISF to ensure that all three companies at RG Kar are provided with accommodation in the vicinity of the hospital.

Chief Justice DY Chandrachud directed that these two officers will see to it that the requisitions made by CISF in terms of logistical support (six buses, four trucks and three light motor vehicles) be provided by 5 pm on Monday and gadgets by 9 pm on the same day.

CM Mamata Banerjee, while stating that the state was “bound to accept the SC order”, stated that “arranging accommodation in an overcrowded area” should have been the responsibility of the state as well as the Centre. “We have provided three places. If they want clothes and food, we will arrange that too. There is a conspiracy. The central govt want to increase their presence and push the police away from all places,” she said at Nabanna.

The issue of accommodation was raised in the SC by solicitor general Tushar Mehta. He stated that the three CISF companies were having to travel from the camp that is 1.5 km away. He claimed that accommodation was provided for only one company. Kapil Sibal, appearing for the state, told the court that in contrast, the state police were travelling from far-off places like Police Training Academy Howrah (22 kms), Body Guard Lines (12 kms) and Police Training School (10 kms away).
