Kolkata: Agro companies are shifting the production of paddy seeds to Bengal from Telangana as almost 50%-60% of the seeds are being made here.
Earlier, agro companies used to bank on Telangana to a great extent for procurement of paddy seeds, which they sold under their brands. These companies have now started making seeds in the state and are also increasing the production of hybrid vegetable seeds that are being exported to Bangladesh, Philippines, Middle East and Europe, said Arijit Ghosh, president, Seedsmen Association of Bengal.
“Now, agro companies are producing ample paddy seeds in Midnapore, Birbhum and Bankura, and catering to eastern parts of the country. Apart from paddy, we are also producing mustard, pulses and vegetables seeds in the state. For rapid production, we are bringing in more hybrid varieties of vegetables,” Ghosh said.
