Kolkata: A 32-year-old woman, who is employed with an NGO, was molested inside a moving bus at Ruby crossing. However, alert bus workers and passengers helped the woman nab the accused, who has been identified as Sourav Shil, a resident of Mukundapur.
Shil was reportedly slapped and beaten up by a few angry passengers before being handed over to the police.Based on the woman’s complaint, cops from the Kasba PS have arrested the accused.
Cops stated that on Tuesday morning, the woman, associated with a voluntary organization whose office is located at Phoolbagan, was on her way to her workplace. The bus was heading towards Ultadanga and the woman had barely boarded the bus near Ruby crossing. By the time the bus reached Ruby crossing, the accused touched her indecently. After keeping silent for a few minutes, she raised a strong objection and accused her of molesting her.
Around 9.30 am, when the bus took a left turn on EM Bypass, the accused suddenly tried to flee. Other passengers, though, were alert. The driver applied brakes after which the passengers got down from the bus, chased the man and caught him.
One of the passengers of the bus, Angshumala Roy, said: “We are protesting to ensure justice for every woman, but the mentality of the miscreants is not changing.”
The matter was reported to the traffic police on duty near the Ruby intersection. He took the young woman and the accused to the local outpost and informed Kasba police station about the incident.
Upon hearing the news, the woman’s brother arrived at the police station. He informed the media about the entire incident. Subsequently, an FIR was filed against the accused on charges of molestation.
The woman has been in a state of panic since the incident, claimed her brother.
“The victim was travelling in a bus and she alleged that Shil tried to outrage her modesty by touching her indecently inside the bus. Accordingly, a case under BNS sections 74 and 351(2)(3) was indexed and the accused arrested. We will record the victim’s statement before a magistrate soon.” said DC (SSD-Jadavpur) Bidisha Kalita.
