  • The mother of the 31-year-old trainee doctor, who was allegedly raped and murdered at RG Kar Hospital on August 9, on Monday said she was disappointed by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s remarks urging people to join the Puja festivities.

Speaking to mediapersons, the mother said: “If people want to get into a festive mood, I can’t say anything. But I know they all consider my daughter as their own. We used to have Durga Puja at my home. My daughter herself did the puja and all the preparations. Durga Puja will never be the same for me, I know. She (the CM) is appealing to people to return to the festive mood. I want to ask if this had happened to someone from her family, would she have said the same thing?”

“They want to throttle this movement, the way my daughter was strangled and murdered. We lost our daughter. Can she (the CM) return my daughter?” she added.

While urging protesting junior doctors to resume work, the CM said, “I would request all — you have done many movements, now enter the festive season of Durga Puja.”

Monday marked one month since the incident took place at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

The victim’s mother had earlier criticised the Kolkata police for their lack of assistance. She stated that there might have been some hope, but the police did not cooperate from the beginning of the case and instead, they attempted to cover up the crime and tampered with evidence.

On Monday, the Supreme Court flagged the delay of “at least 14 hours” in registering the FIR in the junior doctor’s rape-murder case. It also pointed to the absence of a key document (challan) that is sent with the body for post-mortem, and asked the West Bengal government to produce it at the next hearing.
