R G Kar Medical College authorities have sent notices to 51 doctors, house staff, and interns for allegedly “engaging in behaviour that promotes a culture of intimidation”, calling them to appear before an enquiry committee on September 11.
The authorities have further barred the 51 doctors from campus and prohibited their participation in college activities. Many of the doctors are reportedly known to be close to Sandip Ghosh, former principal of R G Kar Medical College and a prime suspect in the rape and murder case that took place on August 9.
The decision was taken at a Special Council Meeting held on September 9 at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital. The list of those summoned, among others, includes two senior resident doctors, one medical research scientist, 20 house staff, 11 interns and other medical (MBBS) students.
“There had been complaints against this section of doctors and students for intimidating and threatening other junior doctors, students and house staff like us. Some were close to the former principal and wielded enormous power inside the campus. Out of fear, many of us were forced to accept their torture. However, now the authorities have started to take some kind of action. Let us see what finally happens,” said a protesting junior doctor.
The resolution of the Special Council Meeting (a copy of which is with The Indian Express) states, “The esteemed College Authorities have taken notice of the grave concerns raised by the Resident Doctors’ Association of RG Kar Medical College during the Special Council Meeting on September 9, 2024. In a formal letter, it was brought to our attention that they have been engaging in behaviour that promotes a culture of intimidation, endangering the democratic atmosphere of the institution.”
“As a result, the following doctors and students in question are required to present themselves positively before the Enquiry Committee on September 11 2024 to defend their innocence. According to the decision made by the Special Council Committee, access to the institution’s campus is restricted for them, unless summoned by the Enquiry Committee. Additionally, participation in college activities is prohibited,” the resolution reads.
