  • Kolkata: Two college students were arrested on Wednesday in two cases of vandalism that left the Netaji Nagar OC and a Kolkata Police Special Branch constable injured, and the OC’s vehicle vandalized. This is the first set of arrests in the case of vandalism during a call to ‘Reclaim The Night’. “We have arrested Anirban Guha and Prasenjit Gayan, students of prominent colleges. We are taking them into police custody,” said an officer.

Chaos erupted in Garia and Jadavpur on the night of Sept 4 after women alleged drunk men disrupted their peaceful protest and misbehaved with two of them. Saying the incident was “planned”, the protesters got into a scuffle with cops to snatch the accused in Garia, failing which, they allegedly ransacked the cop car. At Jadavpur, protesters led by civil society members and celebrities claimed cop inaction and a “determination to save the accused”, and gheraoed Jadavpur PS for several hours.

Meanwhile, astudent, Rupsha Mondal, was arrested for allegedly inciting violence on WhatsApp and giving a call to burn down all police stations and Nabanna. She had been served a notice to come to Jadavpur PS where she was arrested.
