12 Kolkata: The New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) has taken up work to repair the damaged road stretches across New Town. Patchwork has already begun and authorities have identified and prepared a list of thoroughfares in Action Area I, II and II which need to be repaired immediately.
NKDA authorities recently conducted inspections to assess the condition of roads and pavements and have initiated the process to engage agencies to take up repair work of the battered stretches.“Tenders have been floated to engage agencies. With earth movers being used to scrape out the damaged bituminous surface, repair work has already commenced in some places. The roads will get a fresh bituminous layer before Durga Puja,” said an official. Similar to what the local civic bodies are doing in Salt Lake and VIP Road, some places in New Town will also be getting paver block patchwork to cover up the cratered spots.
“The condition of roads in many places in New Town have deteriorated and requires urgent repairs. The pavements have also broken in some places. I had written to the NKDA authorities to look into the matter,” said member of Jyangra Hatiara no II gram panchayat Anupam Maity.
In some stretches the bituminous layer has become damaged due to microtunneling work to lay gas pipelines. “The stretches where excavation was undertaken for pipeline laying will be repaired as well,” said NKDA officials.
Along with NKDA, the Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (Hidco) has also initiated the process to engage firms for repairing different road stretches and pavements across New Town. To improve pedestrian convenience, the authorities are also planning on constructing a few new pavements and roads in Action Area III.
