The junior doctors’ protest against the rape and murder of their colleague at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospotal entered its 33rd day on Wednesday.
In the latest development from today, the doctors have agreed to talks with the West Bengal government but insist on a delegation of 25 to 35 members, rather than the 10 proposed by the government.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had written to the doctors on Wednesday inviting them for a meeting at the secretariat (Nabanna) to resolve the impasse over the incident.
However, the protesting doctors said the mail for the meeting was from the state health secretary, whose resignation they were seeking, and termed it “insulting”. The doctors had also defied the Supreme Court orders to resume their work by Tuesday evening.
Here is the list of five-point demands of the West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Front (WBJDF):
1. Hold all individuals responsible for the rape and murder, as well as any alleged tampering of evidence, accountable and ensure they are punished accordingly.
2. Implement strict disciplinary action against former R.G. Kar Principal Sandip Kumar Ghosh.
3. Call for the resignation of Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal.
4. Enhance and ensure adequate security measures for healthcare workers.
5. eliminate the alleged ‘threat culture’ prevalent in hospitals and medical colleges across West Bengal.
6. Additionally, they also demand the resignation of Principal Secretary of Health Narayan Swaroop Nigam and the Directorate of Health Education.
