  • Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of Kolkata’s R G Kar Medical College, has been placed in a solitary cell at Presidency Central Jail with a guard posted outside for 24 hours. His neighbour is Sudipto Sen, arrested in the multi-crore ponzi scam case.

On Tuesday evening, Ghosh was brought to the Presidency Central Jail after a special court remanded him in judicial custody till September.

Ghosh, 54, was arrested by the CBI on September 2 in connection with the alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar hospital. The Calcutta High Court had ordered a CBI probe into it following the rape and murder of a junior doctor on the campus.

“Sandip Ghosh has been placed in Cell Block No. 10, one of the high-security cell blocks inside the Presidency Central Jail. The block houses ten solitary cells. A special guard has been posted near his cell for 24 hours. This is to ensure his security from other inmates inside the jail premises,” said a senior jail officer.

“Like any ordinary inmate, he has been given blankets to sleep. His cell, like others, has a separate open toilet and a fan,” said the officer.

“Ghosh has asked for the process to contact his family members. Till Wednesday, no one came to visit him. We have told him that we can inform his family members through an official letter. We also told him of his rights inside jail. He has not asked for anything so far,” the officer added.

According to sources, he had tea and bread in breakfast, rice and sabzi for lunch and rice and egg curry for dinner on Wednesday.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED), which is also probing corruption charges against him, has claimed that Ghosh and his wife own three flats and two houses in Kolkata, one flat in Murshidabad, and a farmhouse in South 24 Parganas.

The other three arrested along with Ghosh — Biplab Singha, Suman Hazra and Ghosh’s additional security Afsar Ali —  have been kept in Poila Baish (1 to 22) cell block.

Sanjay Roy, the only accused in the rape and murder case of the junior doctor at R G Kar hospital, is lodged inside Poila Baish cell block of the Presidency Central Jail.

Ghosh has been deliberately kept in a different high-security cell block so that there is no contact between them in any way, a source said. On Wednesday evening, CBI officials visited the jail and interrogated Sanjay Roy. They also took the teeth structure of Roy in a mould, besides questioning him.
