Representative Image KOLKATA: The son of a patient admitted to a private hospital on EM Bypass was arrested on Thursday for allegedly misbehaving with two doctors-a male and a female-and threatening them that "an RG Kar would happen here" on Wednesday.
Accused Dipak Singh has been booked for molestation (Sec 79 of BNS) and under Sec 4 of West Bengal Medicare Service Persons and Medicare Service Institutions Act, 2009.
According to a statement released by Apollo Multispeciality Hospital, a 58-year-old woman, Inder Singh, was admitted on Sept 9 with complaints of shortness of breath and altered mental status. "The patient is admitted with a diagnosis of sepsis with acute ischaemic stroke. The patient is currently critical. The patient's son and his friends have been harassing the hospital staff with abusive behaviour in spite of the hospital staff exercising restraint, considering the condition of the patient. But the patient's family and friends have continued to be abusive and threatening in their behaviour towards the hospital staff," the statement stated.
A police officer said the accused alleged he was upset owing to "a delay in treatment", a claim he could not substantiate with evidence. "We learnt about the incident and contacted the hospital, which submitted a complaint. We learnt the doctors and staff were agitated in the emergency unit and had protested. They wanted an immediate arrest," said a senior officer.
"Inder Singh, suffering a cardiac problem and bleeding in her brain, was admitted to Apollo Hospital. Her son, Dipak insulted the Apollo doctors over alleged delay in treatment. He also reportedly turned violent, intimidating doctors. We have collected CCTV footage. The accused denied the charges, saying he was agitated as his mother was not getting proper treatment," said DC (ESD) Gaurav Lal.
