  • Kolkata: The Eastern Zonal Bench of the National Green Tribunal (NGT), comprising Justice B Amit Sthalekar (judicial member) and Arun Kumar Verma (expert Member), directed the principal secretary of state environment department to file a fresh affidavit addressing the gaps and deficiencies in the previously submitted report on the pollution in Kestopur and Bagjola canals in response to case filed by green activist Subhas Datta.

The new affidavit must include a current status report, along with the proposed remedial measures to address the inadequacies highlighted by the Tribunal. The West Bengal Pollution Control Board (WBPCB) was also instructed to provide quarterly water sample reports from the entire stretch of Kestopur and Bagjola canals. If any parameters exceed permissible limits, WBPCB is expected to communicate with the departments concerned to take appropriate action.

The Tribunal has set the next hearing date for Dec 4, 2024.
