Kolkata: A young female constable on night duty at the doctors’ protest site outside Swasthya Bhavan fell ill in the early hours of Thursday when the protesting doctors rushed to her rescue, giving her initial medical support before they accompanied cops to the nearest hospital.
Cops said LC Nibedita Sarkar of Bidhannagar South PS was suffering from chest congestion and while on duty she experienced breathing difficulties when junior doctors came to her rescue. She is safe and is currently on rest, cops said.
“The junior doctors examined her, provided her with an inhaler, and two junior doctors accompanied her to the nearby hospital. Without timely intervention, her condition could have worsened. Sincere thanks and heartfelt gratitude to the doctors,” West Bengal Police posted on their Facebook page.
Sources said around 12.30 am, Sarkar developed acute exacerbation of asthma and was severely breathless. The protesting doctors examined her and found the auscultation chest was full of rhonchi. She had no inhaler with her. A doctor ran towards the crowd, grabbed the microphone and asked for a LABA+Steroid combination inhaler when one of the protesters gave it to them.
“One of our junior doctors himself administered the dose to her. An ambulance was arranged where two of our residents accompanied her to a hospital. The senior officer present there came to me, held my hand firmly saying ‘thank you’. He said, ‘if you weren’t there, it would have been difficult to save her,” said Bipresh Chakraborty, Doctor of Medicine (DM), resident, gastroenterology.
