  • Kolkata: Reaching out to the family of a labourer in Deganga — who died on Sept 10 after being denied treatment at three state-run hospitals — the North 24 Parganas Zilla Parishad on Thursday promised a govt job to his ailing widow. This is the first instance in the month-long ongoing cease work by junior doctors in state healthcare facilities when the kin of a victim who reportedly died after being refused treatment is being offered a govt job.

On Thursday, a delegation comprising Narayan Goswami, Sabhadhipati of North 24 Parganas Zilla Parishad, and Rahima Mondal, MLA of Deganga, visited the victim’s family.

The victim got into a bike accident on Sept 1. His family first took him to Barasat Medical College Hospital but he was referred to the Medical College in Kolkata when his condition deteriorated. “We were told there was a strike and no doctor was available,” said Jahangir Gazi, Islam’s brother-in-law.

The family then took him to SSKM Hospital, where, after waiting for a long time, they still couldn’t get a bed. They then took him to NRS Hospital, where they were again turned away because of the strike. Finally, on the morning of Sept 2, Islam was admitted to a private hospital in Barasat’s Moina. He underwent surgery on Sept 4 and was placed on a ventilator. He passed away on Tuesday night.
