Lalbazar starts probe against ASI close to RG Kar accused

Kolkata: Lalbazar has started a “comprehensive and all-encompassing” departmental investigation against assistant sub-inspector Anup Dutta from the KP Welfare Committee, who reportedly patronised Sanjay Roy, the civic volunteer from the same department arrested for the rape and murder of the RG Kar doctor.
If found guilty, Dutta would be suspended, police said.
Dutta has been called to Lalbazar for questioning.
An officer said Dutta had violated rules and gave Roy his police bike to use, despite knowing the vehicle was allocated to a full-fledged cop only. Sanjay used Dutta’s allocated bike for several months, including on Aug 9, the day the doctor’s body was found.
Police will also investigate the charge that Dutta had arranged for Sanjay’s accommodation at KP’s Fourth Battalion camp, though a civic volunteer is not authorised to stay there.
The CBI, which had earlier conducted a polygraph test on Dutta, is probing the possibility of the ASI helping Sanjay in concealing his crime. According to a source, Dutta was purportedly instrumental in indulging Sanjay at the behest of a senior officer who, until recently, wielded influence within the organisation.
