  • Kolkata: A low-pressure area over Bay of Bengal and Bangladesh that led to rain on Friday is likely to intensify on Saturday, triggering more such short, sharp spells, the Met office said. The city and its adjoining districts could receive strong surface winds, gusting up to 50 kmph, on Saturday, said the Regional Meteorological Centre.

The city received 33.8 mm rain on Friday.

According to Kolkata Municipal Corporation, Jodhpur Park and Kalighat pumping stations recorded the maximum rain on Friday while Dhapa Lock Gate and Ballygunge received the least. After this, a second spell of rain lashed the city late in the evening, continuing for 45 minutes.

The low-pressure is set to intensify into a depression over coastal Bengal on Saturday, leading to heavy showers in several areas in south Bengal, including Kolkata. The Met office said, “Heavy to very heavy rainfall (7-20 cm) is very likely” in Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, and some other districts.

A bulletin from RMC said that under the influence of Friday morning’s cyclonic circulation over southeast Bangladesh, a low-pressure area formed over southeast Bangladesh and its neighbourhood at night and moved west-northwestwards. “It now lies as a well-marked low-pressure area over northeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining southeast Bangladesh coast,” the bulletin said, adding that the associated cyclonic circulation over southeast Bangladesh and its neighbourhood extends up to 7.6 km above mean sea level.

Several areas in North and South 24 Parganas, Howrah, Hooghly and Kolkata are likely to receive moderate to heavy showers over the weekend. Heavy rain is also likely in Birbhum, East and West Burdwan, East Midnapore, Jhargram and Purulia till Sunday.
