NEW DELHI: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee visited the site of a junior doctors' protest in Salt Lake on Saturday.
The doctors have been protesting outside Swasthya Bhawan, demanding better security at state-run hospitals and the removal of officials following the rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
Banerjee assured the doctors she would address their concerns."I came to meet you as your 'didi' not as the chief minister," she said. She further promised, "I assure you that I will study your demands and take action if someone is found guilty."
Banerjee also announced the immediate dissolution of patient welfare committees at all state-run hospitals.
Despite her visit, the doctors stated they would continue their protest until their demands are discussed in full. They have been at the site since Tuesday, enduring rain and challenging conditions. Banerjee noted, "This is my last attempt to resolve the crisis," urging the doctors to return to work.
